WORKPLACE ILLNESSES AND INJURIES HAVE A HUMAN COST
Always remember, workplace health and safety issues are human issues.
Consider the following points:
Injured people may need full-time care. The primary caregiver (usually a family member) is affected, maybe forever. They may have to give up their own life opportunities to provide care.
Injuries can create financial pressure. The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) will pay up to 80% of income lost but the other 20% is the worker’s loss unless the employer meets that shortfall. Also, the opportunity to improve one’s income and lifestyle is gone. Many other resulting costs are not covered by ACC. ACC is active in promoting workplace health and safety management.
Families are affected. Injured people are often depressed and there are frequently negative effects on family relationships. Often marriages end, causing pain and distress to all involved.
